About Natural Dyeing
Natural dyeing is a fascinating and eco-friendly way to add color to fabrics, yarns, or other materials using dyes derived from natural sources like plants, minerals, or even insects. It’s been practiced for centuries across cultures and is making a comeback as people seek sustainable alternatives to synthetic dyes.
The Beginning of SKKK's Natural Dye Journey
In 1995, SKKK organized a workshop on the application of natural dyes, facilitated by the late Chandramouli and designer Lakshmi Narayan. Following the workshop, SKKK adopted the use of vegetable and natural dyes—derived from seeds, bark, and fruit peels—for dyeing certain yarns and creating block prints.

Our Natural Dye Palette
Most commonly used dyes are plant based colors Indigo (blue), madder root (red), turmeric (yellow), onion skins (orange/yellow), and weld (bright yellow), Pomegranate rinds(shades of yellow to gold and sometimes with a hint of green or beige and with modifiers like iron, you can nudge it toward grayish or muted olive tones. Minerals such as Iron oxide (rusty reds) or copper (greens) are used.
Hand block printing
Hand block printing in India is a traditional textile art that’s been around for centuries, blending craftsmanship, culture, and natural aesthetics. It involves carving intricate designs into wooden blocks, dipping them in dye (often natural), and stamping them onto fabric by hand. It’s labor-intensive, beautiful, and deeply tied to India’s heritage—think vibrant sarees, dupattas, or even modern home decor.
SKKK has a dedicated natural dyeing and hand block division in its premises. The Kendra has obtained GI (Geographical Indication) tag for the craft ‘Sandur Lambani hand embroidery’ in collaboration with the Craft Council of Karnataka in the year 2012. An integral part of the GI design is also the unique and timeless blocks of SKKK.
