The Art of Cane and Bamboo in Karnataka

Cane and bamboo crafts in Karnataka are a significant part of the state's traditional handicraft heritage, reflecting both utility and aesthetic appeal. Karnataka is known for its abundant bamboo cultivation, with the plant maturing in three to four years, alongside good varieties of cane that mature in a similar timeframe. These natural resources are skillfully transformed by local artisans into a variety of products, including baskets, mats, furniture, lamp shades, and wall hangings.

SKKK and the Legacy of the Medar Artisans

SKKK is actively involved in the process of production, marketing and development activities of the cane & bamboo artisans.

A notable community involved in this craft is the Medar (or Medara) community, traditionally skilled in bamboo work. Historically, they have been given preference in the allocation of bamboo from forests, enabling them to sustain their livelihood by crafting items like baskets, winnows, and other utility goods. This practice highlights the socio-economic importance of the craft, providing both part-time and full-time employment opportunities, especially in rural areas.

SKKK crafts people from the Medar community have worked with the Society for over 30 years. SKKK has been making efforts to pass on the skills to the next generation and keep the craft alive.
