On a late evening of a sweltering summer day towards the end of May 2023 Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra (“SKKK”, “Kendra”) received an email from the Ministry of Culture. The Nodal Ministry in respect of the Cultural Track for India’s ongoing G20 Presidency was the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry wanted to make a recce visit the Kendra in the background of G20 Meeting expected to be held at Hampi in July 2023 on the possibilities of a collaboration.

A team of Cultural track members did make a recce visit to the Kendra at Sandur followed by meetings between the G20 consultants the SKKK team near the Bangalore International Airport to ideate, conceptualize and create a plan for the next few weeks. At that moment of time, it was all of five weeks to go to the G20 Cultural Meet at Hampi.

The month of June was filled with reiterations on the design concept, the colors, the texture and the display and the size of display. What initially started as a creation for an embroidery art work display of a backdrop for meeting of the G20 delegates changed into creating an attempt for the Guinness World Record.
A workforce exceeding over 500 artisans and staff worked tirelessly in June and early July to create the required patchworks unfettered by the design iterations. The Kendra received the final specifications of the display for the record in the first few days of July which kept the team on their toes which worked round the clock. Kendra worked with an able team of engineers and Miners from The Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores Ltd. Mines team to build the scaffolding to hold the Display of the patches.

SKKK were allotted a covered space of the display besides the Virupaksha Temple and the Yeduru Basavanna complex at the UNESCO world heritage site at Hampi. Monsoons had commenced in July and the meteorological department predicted rainfall so SKKK functioned under a massive tent to build the scaffolding to hold the embroidery panels.
